Safety Comparison

Both the Accord Sedan and the A4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems and front parking sensors.

Warranty Comparison

Honda’s powertrain warranty covers the Accord Sedan 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Audi covers the A4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the A4 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 4 times as many Honda dealers as there are Audi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Accord Sedan’s warranty.

Reliability Comparison

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Accord Sedan has a standard 550-amp battery. The A4’s 420-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Accord Sedan third among midsize cars in their 2016 Initial Quality Study. The A4 isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Honda 7th in reliability, above the industry average. With 8 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 11th.

Engine Comparison

The Accord Sedan EX-L V6/Touring’s standard 3.5 SOHC V6 produces 26 more horsepower (278 vs. 252) than the A4’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Accord Sedan V6’s fuel efficiency. The A4 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Honda Accord Sedan uses regular unleaded gasoline. The A4 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Accord Sedan has 1.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the A4 (17.2 vs. 15.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Accord Sedan’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The A4 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Accord Sedan is .6 inches wider in the front and 1.6 inches wider in the rear than the track on the A4.

Chassis Comparison

The Honda Accord Sedan may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 300 pounds less than the Audi A4.

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the Accord Sedan V6 (except 4 cyl.) has an electronically controlled liquid-filled front engine mount. A computer-controlled electric current in the liquid changes its viscosity, allowing the mount to dampen the engine completely at all RPMs. The A4 uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

The Accord Sedan uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The A4 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the Accord Sedan EX is quieter than the A4 Prestige Quattro (38 vs. 42 dB).

Passenger Space Comparison

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the Accord Sedan is rated a Mid-size car by the EPA, while the A4 is rated a Compact.

The Accord Sedan has 11.2 cubic feet more passenger volume than the A4 (103.2 vs. 92).

The Accord Sedan has .2 inches more front headroom, 1.2 inches more front legroom, 2.7 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear headroom, 2.8 inches more rear legroom and 2 inches more rear shoulder room than the A4.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Accord Sedan has a much larger trunk than the A4 (15.8 vs. 13 cubic feet).

Ergonomics Comparison

The Accord Sedan EX/EX-L/Touring Auto has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The A4 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

If the windows are left down on the Accord Sedan the driver can raise them all using the key in the outside lock cylinder. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from outside the vehicle using the key in the outside lock cylinder or the keyless remote. The driver of the A4 can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

Economic Advantages Comparison

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Accord Sedan is less expensive to operate than the A4 because it costs $468 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Accord Sedan than the A4, including $566 less for a water pump, $184 less for an alternator, $81 less for front brake pads, $278 less for a starter, $43 less for fuel injection, $224 less for a fuel pump, $448 less for front struts and $36 less for a timing belt/chain.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Honda Accord Sedan will be $5806 to $14680 less than for the Audi A4.
