The Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid weighs 734 to 741 pounds more than the Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

There are over 25 percent more Honda dealers than there are Hyundai dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid’s warranty.

Reliability Comparison

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Hyundai vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Honda 7th in reliability, above the industry average. With 32 more problems per 100 vehicles, Hyundai is ranked 19th.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid has larger tires than the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid (235/45R18 vs. 205/55R16).

The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid’s standard 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid has standard 18-inch wheels. Only 16-inch wheels are available on the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid’s wheelbase is 2 inches longer than on the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid (108.3 inches vs. 106.3 inches).

Ergonomics Comparison

The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid Touring has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid’s variable intermittent wipers have an adjustable delay to allow the driver to choose a setting that best clears the windshield during light rain or mist. The Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid’s fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent.

Both the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid and the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid have standard heated front seats. The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid.
