Safety Comparison

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Honda HR-V are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The GMC Terrain doesn’t offer height-adjustable front seat belts.

Both the HR-V and the Terrain have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available all-wheel drive.

Warranty Comparison

The HR-V’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Terrain’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Reliability Comparison

The engine in the HR-V has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engines in the Terrain have dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the HR-V’s reliability 41 points higher than the Terrain.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Honda vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Honda 12th in reliability, above the industry average. With 16 more problems per 100 vehicles, GMC is ranked 18th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ April 2017 Auto Issue reports that Honda vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Honda 14 places higher in reliability than GMC.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the HR-V gets better fuel mileage than the Terrain:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Honda HR-V uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Terrain with the 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. engine requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

The HR-V stops shorter than the Terrain:

Tires and Wheels Comparison

The HR-V’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Terrain’s standard 65 series tires.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The HR-V AWD has front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the HR-V AWD flat and controlled during cornering. The Terrain’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The HR-V EX-L AWD handles at .84 G’s, while the Terrain Denali AWD pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

Chassis Comparison

The Honda HR-V may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 550 to 700 pounds less than the GMC Terrain.

The HR-V is 1 foot, 1.2 inches shorter than the Terrain, making the HR-V easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Ergonomics Comparison

Consumer Reports rated the HR-V’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Terrain’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

The HR-V EX-L’s standard GPS navigation system has a real-time traffic update feature that plots alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service not available in all areas.) The Terrain’s available navigation system doesn’t offer real-time traffic updates.

Recommendations Comparison

Consumer Reports® recommends the Honda HR-V, based on reliability, safety and performance. The GMC Terrain isn't recommended.

The Honda HR-V outsold the GMC Terrain by 10% during 2017.
