Safety Comparison

The Odyssey has a standard Whiplash Mitigation Front Seat Design, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash Mitigation Front Seat Design system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Pacifica doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Odyssey and the Pacifica have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, front and rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty Comparison

The Odyssey’s 5-year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the Pacifica runs out after 100,000 miles.

Reliability Comparison

The engine in the Odyssey has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engines in the Pacifica have dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Chrysler vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Honda 7th in reliability, above the industry average. With 39 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chrysler is ranked 22nd.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

The Odyssey’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Pacifica’s standard 65 series tires.

For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Odyssey has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Pacifica.

The Odyssey has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Pacifica doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Odyssey has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Odyssey flat and controlled during cornering. The Pacifica’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Odyssey has .6 inches more front headroom, 1.9 inches more rear legroom and 1.6 inches more third row legroom than the Pacifica.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Odyssey’s standard front power windows open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Pacifica’s standard passenger windows don’t open or close automatically. The Odyssey EX/EX-L/Touring/Elite’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches.

If the windows are left open on the Odyssey the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Pacifica can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Odyssey Touring/Elite has a standard center folding armrest for the third row rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable. The Pacifica doesn’t offer a third row rear seat center armrest.

Economic Advantages Comparison

Insurance will cost less for the Odyssey owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Odyssey will cost $900 to $2865 less than the Pacifica over a five-year period.

The Odyssey will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Odyssey will retain 44.5% to 48.99% of its original price after five years, while the Pacifica only retains 41.07% to 44.12%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Honda Odyssey will be $2554 to $3406 less than for the Chrysler Pacifica.
